First Response Mobile School

We are sustaining the bright light of education.

On January 7, 2020, IslandCorps activated its one-of-a-kind, first-response mobile education school to nurture children living in difficult circumstances after the earthquake in Puerto Rico to equip them with the resiliency tools they need to thrive. Learners participating in our first response schools are children who survived an earthquake or hurricane. All have access to learning planet-based education from mindful, world-class educators who are also certified first responders.

Our Montessori-style, first-response education experience is cost-free to all families living in difficult circumstances and is 100% donor-funded. Our classroom without walls is set in a non-traditional, outdoor equitable learning environment to help children focus on the outcome of positive behaviors away from the confines of a traditional classroom. Under our school tent, we encourage peer-to-peer collaboration, regardless of age. Children are encouraged to have free imagination to design solutions, solve problems and build a sustainable model of living for their community’s ecosystem, our natural world, and the planet.

We inspire capacity and self-esteem in learners living under challenging circumstances so they can participate equitably and make the world a better place for their families, friends, communities, and planet.
